DJ is a curly-haired, fun-loving preteen who just wants to stream content to his online friends, hang out with his family, and make the school’s baseball team. As the middle child–sandwiched between Oli, a high school senior consumed with planning the prom, and Essa, the mischievous youngest who loves crashing his streams, DJ often feels invisible.
After a string of letdowns, including being denied a promised reward when his dad leaves town for work again, DJ makes a wish during a thunderstorm for more family time. But instead of bonding over game night, DJ’s wish is granted by a malevolent mythical trickster known as The Game Maestro, who traps the entire family inside a dangerous, video game-inspired realm.
Now, the family must work together to survive a series of challenges pulled from classic and modern games–races, battles, and boss levels included. With every round, the stakes climb higher, and DJ begins to realize that teamwork, trust, and emotional connection may be the only way out. If they can’t outsmart The Game Maestro, they could be trapped in his twisted world forever.
Attack of the Game Maestro blends high-stakes action with heartfelt family moments, offering the humor and emotional depth of The Marvellers by Dhonielle Clayton and Amari and the Night Brothers by B. B. Alston. Attack of the Game Maestro’s authentic portrayal of sibling dynamics, cultural richness, and a fresh take on gaming adventure stories makes it a standout among middle grade and YA fantasy adventure titles.
